An Engagement Ring Guide For Aspiring Grooms

There are as many ways of proposing as there are grooms, and how you intend to propose marriage is none of our business. We are aware, however, that in certain matters of tradition or discretion a little guidance can be useful. With this page we hope simply to reassure because it can be a little daunting if ideas and expectations loom large and vaguely.

Our experience is that a diamond engagement ring is always well-received and to the best of our knowledge, a proposal made with a Ralph Blacklock ring has yet to be declined. We hope that by presenting information clearly and accurately on this site we can demystify the process of buying a diamond, which for many men is first encountered when they propose marriage.

Here are some simple steps to getting not just a ‘Yes’, but a ‘Yes please’…

Get to know diamonds

Taking a look at the Education and Guidance section of our website will set you on the way to understanding diamonds. With this information under your belt, you’ll be well prepared and really know your clarity from your cut. You’ll also get to learn a bit about certification – the certificate details all the technical characteristics of the diamond. This knowledge won’t make you an expert but it will give you some reference points. But remember not to get hung up on the technicalities. This is meant to be the most romantic thing you’ll ever do, so revel in it and don’t turn your research into anything too scientific.

How much should I spend?

Thirdly, and crucially, don’t feel pressured to spend more than you can afford. There’s little point embarking on your engagement already bankrupted: a wedding can be an expensive business. Tradition has it that an engagement ring should be equivalent in value to two months’ salary, and this remains a useful guide. With a little judicious planning, saving this amount is within the grasp of even the most profligate gentleman. You’ll never regret having reached for the best ring you can afford, but to have over-reached could prove sticky in the short-term future.

Choose your moment – and your location

With a ring or without a ring?

You shouldn't think that you need a ring to propose. If you’re not certain what your partner would like, it might be better to choose a ring together. Collaboration is the surest method of finding the perfect ring and browsing together can be every bit as romantic as producing a stunning sparkler from your inside pocket.

Choose your moment – and your location

This is the part where we can’t help you quite as much. Enjoy the moment, it will be one that both of you will never forget.
