The Shape of Diamonds
The shape of a diamond is defined by its cut – it’s the geometric form of a stone after it is cut and polished. But the shape isn't chosen randomly; it’s determined by the form of the original natural crystal. Then, an experienced diamond cutter will decide into what shape the natural crystal should be cut, to create the largest diamond with fewest flaws and the greatest brilliance.
There are many shapes of diamond, from round brilliant cuts to Asscher cuts. Some well-known shapes are: Round, Princess, Emerald, Asscher, Marquise, Oval, Radiant, Pear, Heart and Cushion. Nowadays, new shapes such as the trapeze are developed more often as diamond cutters find innovative ways to make the most of the natural crystals available.
At Ralph Blacklock, we have access to the finest diamonds in the most beautiful cuts. And we’re pretty choosy, too – we handpick them and reject over half the stones that are presented to us. Which helps make sure our customers get the very best.

Round Brilliant Cut
This is the most popular of shape of diamond – in fact over 75% of diamonds sold today are round brilliant cuts. With 58 facet cuts, this cut is calibrated through a precise formula to achieve maximum brilliance. A classic shape.

Oval Cut
This perfectly symmetrical shape is an elongated version of the round brilliant cut. It appeals to small hands as it appears to elongate the fingers. The correct proportions are essential to getting the balance right – the length to width ratio of 1:5 is the traditional shape of an oval diamond. An elegant shape. |

Princess Cut
Based upon the same principles as a round brilliant cut, this is a square cut shape. With fifty facets and pointed corners, it is a relatively new cut, created with maximum brilliance in mind. A modern shape. |

Emerald Cut
With fewer facets than a brilliant cut stone, this cut sparkles less. It’s a rectangular shape that has been step cut and has a large open table that ensures that the observer can look deep into the diamond. A romantic shape. |
